KRAKÓW
One of the famous cities in Poland is Krakow, which lies in the south of Poland. It is a university city and the cultural centre of Poland with a population 800.000 people.
Krakow has many places to go sightseeing. The heart of the city is the city market square, which is the largest square in medieval Europe. There is the most beautiful church in Poland, St. Mary’s church with its famous altar made by Master Wit Stwosz of Nuremberg. Also there are the Town Hall Tower and the Cloth Hall.
In Krakow is the Collegium Maius, which is the oldest university building in Europe. There is a museum with astronomical instruments used by Nicolaus Copernicus, who was a student of Jagiellonian University, which is also in Krakow.
On the hill, close to the city square stands an old castle. This castle was a residence of King Sigmunt the Old, which was rebuilt by Italian architects. It has the largest Renaissance courtyard in Europe. Under the castle is a legendary dragon’s cave. Myth says that a terrifying dragon used to live in this cave a couple centuries ago.
People of Krakow are very friendly, especially to the tourists. The tourists have a big influence on existing Krakow.
Every year in summer time, in the city market square, a big fair takes place. It goes for most of the summer. The tourists can buy many souvenires here. Exactly at noon everyone in Krakow can hear an old Krakowian tune played on a trumpet, which comes from St. Mary’s church tower.
