Firefighters are employed a great number of countries around the world. They play a vital role in protecting the lives of people in fire and controlling and extinguish fires.
Firefighters may perform a variety of tasks. The majority of their time is spent responding to fire alarms and emergency calls. Another of their extremely important tasks is to rescue people stranded or trapped in dangerous situations or inaccessible places and to provide first aid and artificial respiration. In addition, firefighters visit buildings and identify potential fire hazards to study access points and locations of hydrants and also they inspect firefighting equipment. Moreover, they undertake public education tasks including demonstrations, first aid, firefighting training and lectures. Furthermore, they train industrial and volunteer firefighters and give instructions in evacuation, fire prevention, firefighting, rescue and use of breathing apparatus.
Being a firefighter demands several important personal requirements. First of all, it is essential that firefighters have a high degree of physical fitness, which is maintained. In addition, they need to be able to pass a medical examination. They also require working under pressure, in confined spaces and at heights.
The minimum level of education acceptable for entry to this occupation is Year 10. Training is on the job. The new recruit must complete six months probation. Firefighters must progress through a specific training syllabus to maintain employment and advance through the promotion structure.
Firefighters play a vitally important role, which is appreciated by all the community.
