Act 3 Scene 5
During the Elizabeth period daughters had to marry a man who their
dad chose for them. They had to marry a man according to fathers
wishes. A father was the head of the family. Everyone has to listen to him
and do that he wanted to be done. Woman can not refuse to get married
because if she does, her father could thrown her out from home, and she will
have to live on the street, or either die. Her father wants her to say yes
in all situations, agree with him all the time. But if she disagrees, then
he could even kill her or beat her up. It is actually horrible that the
daughter has to marry a man she dont love, a man that her father has
chosen for her. I think that all women should be free and marry a man she
loves. I strongly disagree with the law in Elizabeth society. Everything has
to be done by according to fathers wishes.
At the start of the play it is clear that the Capulet didnt
treat his daughter very good. But before the Scene 5 in Act 3, he was close
to her and they were ok. It has been changed. When Paris asked Capulet for
Juliets hand he didnt agree with it. He said to Paris that
Juliet is too young for getting marriage and she has to say
yes first. But he didnt really care, because it
doesnt matter if she says yesor no,
choice belong to her father. He knows if she says no she will
have to sleep on the street or die without home and food. The evidence how
the Capulet feels, is presented by wining back on his daughter, Juliet.
It can be stated that at first, the Capulet was against
The Juliets marriage with Paris, but then he accepts it, because he
knows he will make the Mountagues family jealous. He believes that
Juliet will be upset by news about her new fiancé, because she doesnt
want to marry any other man than Romeo. Capulet also believes that she will
accept it, because hes the head of the family, so she wont
disagree. That made him feels a bit confused and scared if she didnt
agree. Father thinks of Paris that he is posh, rich and stylish. He wants
him to be with Juliet so Romeo wont be in her life anymore. It will
be just perfect for him, just not for Juliet.
Lady Capulet also agrees with Juliets and Pariss marriage,
because she cant really refuse. She loves Juliet, but she just wants
her to be happy in the future. Lady Capulet was talking to Juliet while her
dad was coming up to her. She was under control of her husband, a head of
the family, but she also wanted this marriage to happen, because Paris was
good looking, rich and posh. She wouldnt speak her mind because the
society was patriarchal so she couldnt.
Juliets refusal to marry Paris affects her father in a variety of
ways in bad way. Capulet were all angry and nervous, his hand was itching,
that means he wanted to hit the Juliet. When he knows that his daughter will
not marry Paris, his aggression gets bigger and he was shouting at her.
While he was trying to beat her up, a nurse was talking to him and trying to
solve the problem. However she wasnt agreeing with Julia. Father
reacted in this way because he wants Juliet to marry Paris so the Mountague
family will be jealous. Juliet feels upset and shes crying all the
time. Language he used was very strong and unpleasant. Also we can see how
rude and evil her father is.
This will have a bad effect on their relationship because father started
call her worthless girl and if she dont go to the church on Thursday,
then he dont want her to look into his face again. All these worlds
sounds so wrong, he regret that he got a child, which makes Juliet feel
horrible. For him, Juliets behaviour is wrong, because she just
should say that she will marry him and nothing else. It is her choice, but
for Capulet, its his decision who she will marry. This will affect
their relationship because before all these arguments they were close enough
to not argue and to talk together like father and daughter.
It is suggested by behaviour of Juliet that she will die, because she
cant stand that she has to marry Paris if she loves Romeo. It seems
to be all good, but not for Juliet. This scene contains enough of nervous to
think that Juliet may kill herself if the things gone like her father wants.
Capulet is highlighting what he has done for Juliet, and his trying to
persuade her to marry Paris. A good job he has done is that he found his
daughter a wonderful husband, but all good is just for him, not for Juliet.
His sure that she will be happy with him, because Paris is good looking,
rich and posh; his also from a good family not like a Romeo. Thats
why he wont accept Romeo. Capulet will throw her out or even kill her
if she continues to refuse. Lady Capulet continues to support her husband by
telling him that Juliet refuses again and she says thank you to him. Father
says to her shes crazy and his surprised that she refuses. Juliet
cannot do as her father wishes, because she knows very well that she is in
love with her Romeo. Juliet feels upset about this situation and she knows
she will have to marry Paris; otherwise Capulet will do what he said.
When Juliet kills herself we see further evidence of how much he loved his
daughter, and how he wanted to help her. When she drunk the poison, Romeo
saw her dead so he drank the poison as she did. Capulet was organising her
wedding, but when he recognised that Juliet is dead, she drunk the poison.
